Going Out in the Pandemic: What to Know before You Go

During the pandemic, what’s the best way avoid getting yourself or others sick? Stay home! But if you must go out, reduce your risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 with this key info from our friends at the City and County of San Francisco.

First off, it goes without saying that if you do go out, wear a face mask, clean your hands frequently and social distance from anyone who doesn’t live with you by staying 6 feet apart. Here’s what to “know before you go.”

Who will attend?

Amid COVID, we need to look out for each other more than ever. Consider who will be where you are going before you step out the door.

Note that people over the age of 60 or who have chronic medical conditions are at greatest risk.

While at your destination, keep the number of people you interact with small.

Remember that the fewer the people involved, the safer it is for everyone. Also, gatherings over 12 people are not permitted. And, of course, if you feel sick, stay home!

What will be happening?

Be mindful that people might refrain from wearing masks if food, drink or lots of physical activity is afoot wherever you’re going.

When everyone wears face coverings, we all are safer for it. My mask protects you and your mask protects me, right? To reiterate, those who live in different households should keep a minimum of 6 feet apart.

Don’t share any food or items—just don’t! Disinfect items between use if some items must be shared.

Where will this outing take place?

If you decide to go out, keep in mind that outdoors is the safest place to do so.

Avoid indoor interactions with people you don’t live with.

Always remember to wear your mask and stay 6 feet apart from others you encounter.

While out, make sure you’ll be able to wash your hands and carry hand sanitizer.
