In public and affordable housing community building is difficult due to a lack of trust among neighbors. Leadership is not fully developed and a pervasive “no snitching” policy derails attempts to increase reporting and police response. SAFE’s Leadership Training provides community building and leadership training to a workshop of 10-15 community members. The 14-week program helps strengthen community by building trust among group members and teaches skills for how to manage a group. People get to know their neighbors better and begin to look out for suspicious activity and protect each other’s homes, persons and property. Community building also helps to identify neighborhood issues and address them proactively.
