With the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) reporting that residential burglaries are on the rise during the pandemic, it’s ever-more important for community members to be on top of their home security game.
One quick way toward achieving this goal is to self-evaluate how your home “rates” when it comes to the three key elements to deterring crime: visibility, time and noise. Most homes can be secured by methods that are not only cost-effective, but also aesthetically acceptable.
Let’s take a look at what exactly these security elements are and how they can help you protect your home.
Visibility: Residents can increase the chance of a potential burglar being spotted by a neighbor or passerby by improving lighting, trimming shrubbery and putting up properly designed fencing around the home.
Time: A major rule of thumb for burglars is that time is of the essence. The more time a burglar must take to get into a home, the more likely he or she will be seen or heard by someone. It’s also important to keep in mind that the better the locks you have on your doors and windows, the longer it will take a criminal to break in through those areas.
Noise: The sounds made by forcing entry into a building may just be enough to alert a neighbor, especially if the break-in trips a burglar alarm. If your doors and windows are of sound construction and properly locked, the only way inside without a key is via a somewhat conspicuous break-in. Many burglars won’t take their chances.
