SFPD Confirms Rise in Burglaries during Pandemic

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) recently confirmed something that many city residents may have suspected: burglaries have been on the rise since the shelter-in-place order was enacted. According to a recent KTVU report, the SFPD saw a 40.8 percent increase in burglaries from January through July of

this year compared to last year.

"There has been an increase since the shelter-in-place order went into effect in San Francisco," Officer Adam Lobsinger from the SFPD confirmed to KTVU.

The uptick in burglaries at this time may seem somewhat surprising, given that most people are working from home during the pandemic.

"Being at home in your residence does not mean you cannot be the victim of a burglary," Officer Lobsinger told KTVU. "Garages are easy targets because they're often unoccupied."

The SFPD cautioned residents that garages are frequently targeted by burglars since they usually contain bicycles and other easily sold items.

So, what can San Francisco residents do to make sure they don’t fall victim to burglaries? Per the KTVU report, officers advise that people make their garage and home uninviting targets."

Home owners can do a number of things to secure their homes when they're at home and while they're away," Officer Lobsinger told KTVU. "We tell people to lock and secure their doors and their garages, the windows, anything that's a potential entryway for a burglar. Install lights, a camera, anything you think might deter a robber from even trying to enter your home."

The SFPD also told KTVU that it’s best for residents to lock their bikes even if it's in their own garage.
